LAS VEGAS (MarketWatch) — Is the Consumer Electronics Show still relevant?

That debate flowed this week at the annual gathering of the technology industry, which typically serves as the launchpad for many of the year’s biggest tech products. While there seemed to be fewer major products or news this year, and more companies deciding not to come back, the event remains bigger than ever, even if the most interesting stuff occurs on the sidelines or behind closed doors.

Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corp. (NWS, NWSA), owner of this newswire, didn’t participate in any official CES events, but he tweeted from there. He said that after CES, “Most top Newscorp execs will huddle to review their own digital efforts and plan forward.”

He also commented on the 800-pound gorilla hanging over the conference. “All talk is about coming Apple tv. Plenty of apprehension, no firm facts but eyes on their enormous cash pile,” Murdoch tweeted.

Apple hasn’t had a presence at CES for years, but the company — like others — still sends a contingent to see what is going on and to talk to conference attendees.

While the back rooms at CES may still be busy, the more than 37 football fields of exhibit space — a record, according to the show’s organizers — is losing some pizzazz. Microsoft Corp.

and Verizon Wireless, were quieter this year.

Meanwhile, many of the companies with the more prominent presentations weren’t those that people typically associate with consumer electronics, such as semiconductor companies and automakers.

Executives from the world’s most influential car and component makers rushed to Las Vegas after unveiling new products at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which was occurring at the same time. Veteran attendees from the automotive industry said car companies are beginning to place more importance on the Las Vegas show because it draws more wide-ranging press coverage.

And that may be the secret sauce to CES’ continued popularity. More than 5,000 media members wrote, reported and recorded from the event, making it — at least for a week — the center of the tech world.

The final numbers from this year's CES are in: More than 140,000 attended, higher than recent years and leading some to joke that the hallways were so crowded that the event should be renamed "Occupy CES."

The show included more than 3,100 exhibitors displaying more than 20,000 products on a CES-record 1.86 million square feet of floor space.

CES contributed about $150 million to the Las Vegas economy, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The eventuality of an Apple television was a foregone conclusion for many conferencegoers. Jokes aplenty were cracked about how the wave of voice-recognition technology in TVs this year was a sign the industry didn't want to be caught off guard by the unreleased Apple product.

TV and device executives said they had been working on this technology before Apple's Siri was announced in October of last year. The latest product offerings are part of the natural evolution of the market, they said, although some are prepared to respond if an Apple TV is announced.

YWCA responds to funding shortfall with call for volunteer advocates for abuse …

One in four women will suffer from domestic violence.

During 2010 in Knox County, the Knoxville Police Department and

Knox County Sheriffs Office reported responses to 19,043 domestic violence-related calls.

These are staggering statistics, but they are numbers the YWCA fights through its Victim Advocacy Program aimed at helping victims of domestic violence.

The YWCA is one of many partners in Knoxvilles Family Justice Center that provide advocates to assist victims through the process of escaping and overcoming situations of domestic violence. Currently, the YWCA provides seven professional full-time advocates through federal funding; however, the loss of grant money which expires in March will result in the loss of four of the YWCA advocates.

The new effort to make up that loss is a community volunteer-driven program called Enough!.

Though the YWCA is continuing to apply for grants, in the meantime YWCA Knoxville CEO Marigail Mullin says, We have an obligation to the community and to our clients to provide this service. And to continue to fulfill this obligation without grant funding, YWCA executives began by looking to the past for inspiration.

Mullin says it wasnt until the mid to late-1970s that people began talking about the previously taboo issue of domestic violence. Once it did come to light, everything from answering phone calls to helping victims navigate the court system was handled by community volunteers. As knowledge of the issue increased, it became professionalized and programs slowly became more heavily funded by grants.

We put our heads together and remembered the past, says Mullin of the inspiration for Enough!.

Lisa Higginbotham, YWCA Knoxvilles Director of Social Work, provides supervision for the Victim Advocacy Program and is responsible for developing and supervising the Enough! initiative.

I think the community will fill the loss of advocates, says Higginbotham, who says the volunteers will largely fill the same obligations as the current full-time advocates.

The YWCA is looking for men and women to provide victims with everything from court support to childcare services as well as volunteers willing to do speaking engagements and help with community outreach. There is also a major need for bilingual volunteers.

A major factor in helping victims, says Higginbotham, is providing continuous support. As a result, the YWCA is asking for volunteers to give at least a one-year commitment and a minimum of 12 hours work each month.

Once community volunteers pass a mandatory screening, they will receive 30 hours of training â?? 20 hours of workshops and 10 hours of fieldwork.

Our advocates really do save lives, says Higginbotham.

Alex JimÃnez works as the YWCAs Bilingual Advocate. Shes currently handling 52 open domestic violence cases.

People are still getting left out, says JimÃnez.

JimÃnez work day begins at 6:30 every morning, and she performs a variety of duties everyday, including but never limited to following up on police reports, riding with investigators, handling on-going criminal cases, and giving her clients a confident voice in the courtroom.

My clients have no one, she says. Theyre just completely broken down.

Despite her workload and all of the obstacles she and her clients must work to overcome each day, including the very real problem of victims retreating back to their abusers, JimÃnez says, It is the most rewarding job Ive ever had.

Theres nothing like someone saying, You saved my life.

Community members who are interested in volunteering for the Enough! initiative should visit www.ywcaknox.com to fill out a volunteer application or call 865-523-6126 on weekday mornings to speak with Teri.

If volunteering is not an option, community members can provide in other ways, including donating gas cards, bus tickets, grocery cards and gift cards. The YWCA also collects used cell phones, which become 911 phones for victims. YWCA Knoxville is located downtown on Clinch Avenue.

Does the US bore consumer camera companies?

LAS VEGAS–This was an odd
CES for cameras.

We usually only get point-and-shoots, and some generally uninteresting ones at that. This year we were greeted with three models targeted at enthusiasts and pros, though: the Fujifilm X-Pro1, the Nikon D4, and the Canon PowerShot G1 X. Consequently, they were each nominated for a CNET Best of CES award in the digital imaging category.

The overall number of point-and-shoot announcements was down (no thanks to Fujifilms deluge of 19 models), but it looks like thats just a CES phenomenon; we expect a lot of the entry-level and mainstream models not announced here to pop up at CP+ in Japan in early February.

Is it a sign of the US markets decreasing relevance to the camera companies? With Kodak having flushed itself, every major camera company is based in Asia. We still buy a lot of cameras in the US, but were not growing as fast as other regions, and are a mature, price-conscious market, which can be unappealing to companies looking for high volume and high margins.

Its also possible that the timing of CP+, in PMAs old spot, simply matches camera makers habitual announcement cycle.

Despite all that, we still got plenty of point-and-shoot camera announcements, and with them, a closer look at what you can expect this year as manufacturers build out their 2012 lineups.

For 2012, probably the biggest trend youll find is more models with built-in Wi-Fi. In the past, Wi-Fi cameras were pretty much a joke mainly because they were of limited use; the wireless connection was basically just a substitute for a USB cord, and a slow one at that. Now, in a time of smartphones and apps and faster networks, these cameras can connect to your home network for backup and storage, upload to a cloud service, or send images directly to a smartphone for editing with a favorite app before uploading them to Facebook or Twitter or whatever.

An average consumer–even one who owns a smartphone–probably wont be running out to buy a camera just because it has Wi-Fi anytime soon. Unless the manufacturers and retailers (and reviewers like us) do a decent job of explaining why Wi-Fi is valuable to have and all that it can do for people, itll just be another feature that never gets used.

Fire companies urge use of reflective house numbers

North County firefighters and emergency medical technicians are hoping area homeowners will make a New Years resolution to mark their houses with reflective numbers so they can be located easily.

To make that resolution easier to keep, several volunteer companies sell numbers big enough to be seen in the daytime that also reflect headlights so theyre visible at night.

To that end, Butler, Hereford, Long Green and Maryland Line volunteer fire companies all sell the numbers.

Ward eyes return to competitive lacrosse

Jason Ward hadnt played a full-out competitive game of lacrosse in nearly 15 years.
That changed on Saturday as the Brampton Battalion assistant coach suited up for the Brampton Inferno against the Oshawa Machine in the final game of a new Canadian Lacrosse League triple-header at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa.
Of course there is a pretty good reason that the now 32-year-old Oshawa native has gone so long in between.
Ward won a Minto Cup with the Whitby Warriors in 1997, the same year he was selected by the Montreal Canadiens, 11th overall, in the first round of the National Hockey League draft. He then spent the next 13 seasons between the OHL, AHL and NHL, playing 336 games at the sports highest level for the Canadiens, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Tampa Bay Lightning.
His playing days now in the rear view, Ward said his desire to compete at a high level once again prompted his decision to go for a run with the Inferno.
Lacrosse was always one of those games I had a lot of passion for. Ive always enjoyed it, he said. Ive always been a competitive guy and been in competitive sports. Coaching lacrosse and coaching the hockey, I definitely still get to be around the game, but I lose that part of being in the game. I use my voice as the tool rather than my feet and my hands and Ive always preferred to be a hands-on kind of guy.
Despite the long layoff between his junior days and this shot with CLAX, Ward isnt completely rusty. He picked up the stick last year and played in one masters tournament with a couple of friends and did the same again this summer, even playing in the provincial championships held in Whitby.
While Ward isnt sure of his chances of cracking the Inferno lineup, he insists the opportunity itself is something to cherish. So, too, is a chance to play the game in a place where, really, it all began for him many years ago.
Its always nice to go back where your roots are and stuff like that. Its definitely exciting, said Ward, who played all his minor hockey in Oshawa and still brings his kids through old neighbourhoods that he remembers as a youngster when he comes through town.
Worst-case scenario I go out to a couple of practices and find out the game is too fast or I just cant adapt. But you know what? This is fun, so why not try it for a little bit, he added.
And Ward served notice that he still has the goal-scoring ability. He scored once for the Inferno as they dropped an 18-10 decision to the Oshawa Machine.
The league also hosted a Christmas Box Lacrosse Clinic on Saturday, led by Brampton native Jim Veltman. Sessions were held for peewee, minor bantam, major bantam and midget aged players, along with others born between 1992 and 1995.

Sports field remodelling project hits all targets

By Ellie Parry in General Sports on 5th Jan 2012 8:00

A sports field remodelling project at Hylands School in Chelmsford, Essex, has hit all targets with regard to the environment, the available budget and the provision of additional high-class sports facilities for the schools 900-plus pupils.

According to Estates Manager, Charlie Manning, the scheme prepared by expert agronomist, Gordon Jaaback, and produced by specialist pitch and water engineering contractor, MJ Abbott Limited, remains on schedule to provide much needed extended school sports facilities by summer 2012.

Comprising a full-size football pitch with a perimeter grass athletics track, the project involved the re-use of 2,700 cubic metres of soil that had been removed during the construction of a new school building.

We were faced with two choices, explained Mr Manning, Dispose of the surplus soil off-site at considerable cost or use it to improve a large existing undulating grassed area that was wholly unsuitable for competitive sports.

It was not a difficult decision to go for the second option, a move which represented best value and enabled responsible re-use of the soil.

At the recommendation of surveyors, Barker Associates, the company that had designed its new building, Hylands School engaged Gordon Jaaback to draw up a scheme to upgrade the northern pitch, as it is known, into a top-class playing surface, built to Sport England specifications and within the available budget.

Tender documents were sent to five companies with MJ Abbott securing the contract due to the Wiltshire firms competitive price and high reputation gained on previous pitch and golf course contracts using solely its own machinery and staff.

Commencing in August 2011 and following Mr Jaabacks computer-generated design, MJ Abbott used cut and fill techniques to reposition some 4,500 sq m of subsoil to establish the required pitch levels before replacing the top soil to a firmed depth of 200mm, ready for seeding with top quality perennial ryegrass.

Budget restrictions meant that a comprehensive drainage system was out of the question. Instead, a central camber was formed within the pitchs surface by MJ Abbott to Gordon Jaabacks specification. This was designed to remove excess surface water following heavy rain, with run-off being captured in swales created on three sides of the pitch.

To aid optimum grass seed establishment and growth, MJ Abbott incorporated a high phosphate fertiliser into the soil prior to the sowing of grass seed coated with a natural mycorrhizal growth inoculant.

Sown in September, the grass is now becoming well established and the school is hopeful that the field will be ready for use in early summer 2012. Until then, MJ Abbott is carrying out a full pitch maintenance regime which the school expects to take over next summer. This will ensure that the surface remains both free-draining and in prime condition for the future.

Zhang Yimou’s latest epic lauds humanity in wartime

BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) — Chinese director Zhang Yimous The Flowers of War, starring Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale, will debut nationwide Friday with a story line that illuminates human nature during turbulent times.

The film takes place in Nanjing during the Japanese occupation in 1937, and tells the story of a foreign mortician struggling to protect a group of schoolgirls and prostitutes.

The moral of the film is that humanitys goodness can defeat evil. Goodness is the only way out for mankind, said Liu Heng, who wrote the screenplay for the 150-min film, at the premiere ceremony.

Zhang said it is a character-driven film, and what distinguished it from previous films depicting the Nanjing Massacre is that it glorifies the most beautiful side of humanity by showing characters decisions in the face of life and death.

The beauty of humanity is love and redemption, Zhang said.

Christian Bale, who won a best supporting Oscar for his role in The Fighter, is admired by Zhang for his versatility and hardworking spirit and is expected to help the film earn more international attention and awards.

The film has earned mixed reactions after select screenings and is Chinas official Academy Award entry for best foreign language film.

This is Zhangs best in recent years. It has a good story, real emotions and characters portrayed with flesh and blood, said Lin Yin, a postgraduate from Tsinghua University, after watching the film at one of its select screenings.

According to Lin, the film, instead of focusing on the cruelty of invaders and a dark and depressing atmosphere like previous Nanjing Massacre films, made her feel warm and moved with soldiers, prostitutes and those from different walks of life resolutely choosing to sacrifice themselves to save the country as the story unfolded.

A review of Beijing-based Jinghua Times described the film as having both strong sound and visual effects as well as humanistic power, calling it very Oscarish.

However, renowned critic Zhu Dake didnt approve filmmakers to take advantage of a serious historical event to fulfil box office ambitions.

We fully understand the conscience and emotions of prostitutes and dont oppose illustrating their political virtues in a humanistic way. However, for a heavy theme like the Nanjing Massacre, its not proper to drum up sex scenes out of box office ambitions, Zhu wrote in a review carried by the Southern Metropolis Daily.

Such erotic patriotism is a serious mistake in value judgment, Zhu added.

Taking over five years to make, it is reportedly the most expensive Chinese film to date, with an estimated cost of over 600 million yuan (95 million US dollars).

The film started screening in advance in several cities, such as Beijing, Thursday evening, the producer said.

On Monday, the Chinese-language book Wo Men Yi Qi Zou Guo, or We Walked Through this Together, was published. It documents the entire film-making process and includes many behind-the-scene stories as well as articles written by members of the crew, including Zhang and Bale.
